Occlusion #6, 2024

Part of a series of pieces titled ‘An Extension of Circumstance’ in which illusions inherent in certain grid images form interplays between what is seen, what is imagined, and what is assumed.

Digital projection, digital print, gobo light, peephole, cctv camera and monitor.

This site-specific work formed part of the exhibition Foresight and Afterimage at Cable Depot London in 2024, and consisted of a ‘scintillating grid’ in which illusory black dots seem to scatter at the intersections of the grey lines. Next to this printed image was a projected image of a grid in which white dots or circles seem to appear between the grid lines. Together illusionary dots of white and black appear and disappear between two adjacent images, both complementing and cancelling each other.

A gobo light projected a white circle of light onto the printed grid and the projected grid aligned with a hole drilled through the wall at the point at which a white dot might otherwise appear. As a viewer approached this work their shadow partially obscured the projected image. Then through the peephole a viewer saw a cctv image of themselves, from behind, looking through the hole. This video had a one second delay so that a viewer glimpsed an infinitely regressing image relayed by the camera and monitor system before their presence broke the loop and they became aware of themselves within the work.
